RECORD ATTENDANCE FOR 'BEST EVER' CONFERENCE

A record 345 delegates from 24 countries attended the 2005 STI Annual International Conference in La Coruņa, Spain, 18-20 November. The questionnaire survey of delegate opinions confirms it was the 'best ever' in terms of content and presentation quality.

The increase in delegates was mainly sail trainers, up from about 100 lin 2004 to 158 in 2005 - thanks largely to support from La Coruņa city council which helped to keep delegate fees low and enabled deeply discounted hotel rates for sail trainers. La Coruņa also hosted the Conference Gala Dinner and a Reception for all delegates as well as providing the conference facilities in the city's newly opened Congress Centre.

The format for the Conference followed the pattern of recent years with two Seminars, one for sail trainers and the other for port delegates, either side of a Plenary conference session for all delegates.

The Sail Training Seminar began with a session for all sail trainers with presentations related to twin themes of Youth at the Helm, at which young trainees participated in the discussions and led the working groups, and Technology Today. Workshops were also held on The Sinking of Mohawk, Equipment Developments for Sail Training Vessels, and Search and Rescue. Members of the Sail Training International Class A Tall Ships Forum met separately to discuss a range of issues of specific interest to the big square rigged sail training Tall Ships.

The theme of the European Host Port Seminar was The Tall Ships' Races and the Community and included presentations on trainee recruitment, involving local businesses and educational programmes. There was also time set aside for working groups for ports hosting The Tall Ships' Races in future years, and ports wishing to bid for future Races.

Presentations and summaries of the discussions (where available) can be downloaded from each of the pages on Host Port Seminar, Sail Training Seminar and Plenary Session. The Class A Tall Ships Forum members can also download presentations and reports from their own section of this website.
