There’s an air of anticipation and excitement around Fredrikstad, Norway today.   The PROVISIONAL results of the first leg of The Tall Ships Races 2014 have now been published and there is a lot of activity around the port.

The ships are starting to arrive; Liaison Officers are busy working around the port in their bright blue t-shirts; tents are going up and stages are being built.  By 12 noon tomorrow (Saturday 12 July) all the vessels due will be docked and the festivities will begin.

Knut Western, Race Chairman, Sail Training International said, “We’ve seen a challenging race from Harlingen to Fredrikstad and the provisional results are now out – but we will have to wait until the prize giving ceremony on Sunday for final confirmation of the winners.

“I congratulate the Captains and crews of all vessels for showing great skill and tactics.  Everyone who took part has done so under challenging conditions and I applaud them all.

At a briefing meeting with all the Liaison Officers this morning he said, “You are central to the success of this event  – you are an essential link between the trainees and city and make the Captains want to come back. You have the most important job. The port has put on a terrific programme and now we just need to ensure that everyone has a warm and wonderful welcome in Fredrikstad.”
