Battles Ahead in Race 1

July 11, 2012

Race 1 is starting to take shape with some exciting battles playing out as old rivalry is rekindled, particularly in Class A between Mir and Dar Mlodziezy.

Paul Bishop, Race Director, The Tall Ships Races 2012 provides his own commentary on how the race is unfolding so far:

“There are some exciting battles playing out. Dar Mlodziezy has been steadily closing on her arch rival Mir who has led in Class A since the start and Mir has responded over the past few hours by going more to the west to cover her, placing herself between Dar Mlodziezy and the next waypoint.

Ocean Spirit of Moray has overhauled Ebb Tide and is currently the closest vessel to the finish with 433 miles to go. Ebb Tide is just half a mile behind her but is upwind which should give her back the advantage when the wind backs to the SW. Rona II is chasing them hard”

The fleet have continued to enjoy favourable NW winds overnight and are

making good progress but the weather forecast dictates that they are likely to slow down over the next

24hrs.  Winds are predicted to ease at first before backing and

strengthening to an unfavourable SW.
