It will be a great pleasure for Harlingen to be a host port for
The Tall Ships Races 2014 and it will be the first time the port has hosted
this international race. The arrival of
the majestic Tall Ships to the heart of Harlingen will, without doubt, be the
most impressive event of the year in the northern region of the Netherlands.
Harlingen is one of the oldest seaports in The Netherlands and is the gateway
to northern Holland from the North Sea.
It is the homeport for sea-going trawlers and a large traditional sail
charter fleet. Harlingen is a yachting
centre and has two ancient tidal docks, the Noorderhaven and Zuidehaven which
surround the historic city centre and give Harlingen its unique character. Smaller Tall Ships can berth in the
Noorderhaven, lined with historic warehouses and the stately houses of ship
On July 6 2014 approximately 60 to 100 Tall Ships will be departing the port
of Harlingen and on board will be at least 1,000 trainees aged between 15 and
25 years. They will make the journey of their lives and begin with the first
Race of The Tall Ships Races 2014 from Harlingen to Fredrikstad (Norway).
They will learn to cooperate with people of all nationalities and be able to share their knowledge. They will learn that you can use the wind to your advantage and that hardships make you stronger. It will inspire them to roll up their shirt sleeves. They will learn to take orders from people who are older and more skilled than they are.
An extraordinary journey that ends in "An Ocean Of Experience’.
